Fire Extinguisher Types
Understanding Fire Extinguisher Variants and Applications
Selecting the appropriate fire suppression tool is vital, as deploying an incorrect agent can potentially escalate a fire. At Vadodara FireGuard, we provide and maintain the following essential types:
- Dry Powder (ABC) Extinguishers: Known as the “all-rounder” in fire safety, these are effective against wood, paper (Class A), flammable liquids (Class B), and gas-based (Class C) fires. They are the most common safety installation for Vadodara’s residential apartments and commercial offices.
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Units: These are the gold standard for electrical risks and liquid fires. Because CO2 is a clean agent that leaves zero mess and does not conduct electricity, it is the best choice for server rooms, tech hubs, and industrial labs.
- Water and Mechanical Foam Extinguishers: Designed specifically for Class A fires (solid combustibles), foam variants are also excellent for liquid fires because they create a thick “smothering” layer that cuts off oxygen and cools the fuel.
Fire Safety Equipment Maintenance & Service Intervals
Regular servicing is the only way to guarantee your equipment will perform during an emergency. In compliance with Indian Standard (IS) codes, your fire extinguishers must follow this schedule:
- Routine Visual Checks (Monthly): Conduct a quick walk-through to ensure units are in their designated spots, the pressure needle is firmly in the green zone, and there are no visible dents or blocked discharge hoses.
- Professional Annual Maintenance (AMC): Once a year, a certified technician must perform an in-depth inspection. This involves checking the internal chemical health and ensuring all mechanical triggers and seals are in perfect working order.
- Hydrostatic Pressure Testing: Every 3 to 5 years (depending on the type), the extinguisher cylinders must undergo high-pressure testing. This confirms the metal shell is strong enough to hold its contents safely without the risk of bursting or leaking.
